Sri Rama and Hanumana

　　Once Sri Rama was highly pleased with his faithful devote, Hanumana, and gave him a necklace of pearls. Hanumana in all humility received it, truned it over and over and broke one of the pearls with his teath and looked inside. He then threw away the whole necklace of pearls. Lakshmana who was watching him exclaimed, "Here is a monkey who does not know the worth of pearls. Not only he spoiled the necklace by breaking a pearl with his teeth but he has thrown it away as if it were a clod of earth." Rama told him to ask Hanumana why he had acted in this manner. On being questioned Hanumana replied, "I looked to see whether the necklace contained any image of name of Sri Rama. As I did not find either I threw it away."

シュリ・ラーマとハヌマーン

　あるとき，シュリ・ラーマが彼の忠実な信者ハヌマーンのことを大変に喜ばれ、彼に真珠のネックレースを与えられた。ハヌマーンはいやうやしくそれをいただき、幾たびもひっくり返した後、真珠の一粒をかみくだいてその中をよく見た。それからその真珠のネックレースを、そのまま投げすてた。それを見ていたラクシュマナが叫んだ、「ここに、真珠の値打ちを知らないサルがいる。一粒を歯ででかみくだいてネックレース全体をダメにしただけでなく、それを土くれか何かのように投げすてた」と。ラーマは彼に、なぜそのようなことをしたのか、ハヌマーンに尋ねよ、と命じた、尋ねられて、ハヌマーンはこう答えた、「私は、ネックレースがシュリ・ラーマのお姿か御名を含んでいるかどうか、しらべました。どちらも見いだせなかったのですてたのです」
